This RI model was built at the Army’s Rock Island Arsenal and is equipped with the original 22-inch barrel of the M14, with minor changes such as the scope mount and pistol grip. Since 2010, two guns have been deployed to each infantry platoon of the Afghan contingent to supplement their range.
The old high-powered rifle “M14” was repurposed due to the lack of range of the M16/M4 on the battlefields of the Middle East. To accommodate modern warfare, it was built with an aluminum chassis with a rail system and an adjustable stock, and used by special forces as the EBR (Enhanced Battle Rifle). After undergoing practical evaluation, the EBR was then introduced to general forces.
